The Comic:
University of Earth is a webcomic about a college full of aliens that orbits and studies earth. Earth is currently under review by the IPTO- the Inter-Planetary Trade Organization. There is a debate as to if Earth and humanity is mature enough to handle the knowladge and responsiblilty of being a memeber of the IPTO. This comic deals with the adventures of students at this University who one day hope to become ambassitors to Earth if the planet is ever accepted. They study Earth and it's society. University of Earth Is drawn with pencil, inked with pen and scanned. The comic updates weekdays around 11 pm.
The Artist:
Kat Holland is a 17 year-old dreamer from Raleigh, North Carolina. She graduates high school in June and hopes to be able to write the comic as a full time job by the end of the summer. She also writes poetry and is working on a novel. She's the co-founder and Vice President of the Writer's Club at her high school.
The Characters:
Shagnasty: is a fluffy fluffball made up of lots of individual strands. He had a girlfriend before leaving his home planet, but she didn't want to try long distance and made him choose. He chose the University. He stubbornly believes in humanity in the dream-like state of the uneducated. He eats by absorbing things into his fuzz and talks by vibrating two of his strings together. His arms and legs are extensions of two of these strings.
Tiah: is, from an earth persepctive, made of a horse's head and hooves, bear ears, an eel's dorsal fin and human-ish hips and legs. She's a herbivore. Her long neck allows her to eat leaves higher than other species on her planet, like a bipedal giraffe. She reproduces tri-sexually, which means as apposed to our Earth bi-sexually, she needs two mates to conceive. Her species only commits socially to one partner- the male but utilizes the third gender which translates most closely into “permanent bachelor” in English. They mate with their males for life but use a “bachelor” when they need to get pregnant. Tiah is dating Doston, who's a second year like her. They met at one of the group interviews during the application process. Her parents don't approve of their relationship.
Doston: is an amphibian. He needs both air and water to breathe properly. During the night, his species sleeps in the clear waters of his home planet. He has a sort of bathtub type bed filled with the special mixture. The “hairs” on his head absorb water throughout the night until they are completely saturated and his head closes shut. Then, throughout the day, his head-flaps, or Xizoy, open, allowing air in. The air filters through the water-soaked “hairs” and enters his bloodstream. As the day progresses, the Xizoy open more and more until he has an afro and needs to soak. His species produces bi-sexually like humans.
Gessie: (pronounced like Guess-ee) is from a planet off the Andromeda galaxy where everything is neat and clean. They have low immune systems because of the cleanliness and she needs to take health boosters to survive in college. Her planet is also very cold which is why her species evolved a built- in cape to wrap around themselves and keep warm. The cape- and her arms which form the edges of the cape- come out of the top of her head.
